Hernias typically occurs in the groins (inguinal or femoral), around the belly button (umbilical) or following abdominal surgery (incisional). They are due to a weakness or defect in the muscular lining that allows internal structures such as bowel or fat to bulge outwards on straining or coughing. Rarely hernias can strangulate or cause an obstruction to the bowel. Recurring symptoms of pain around a hernia may indicate an increased risk of this occuring.
Mr Harris has extensive experience in the surgical repair of hernias, including groin hernia surgery. His dissertation for his Masters in Surgery was on laparoscopic (keyhole) hernia repair and meshes. As a result he can repair most hernias laparoscopically.
